WINFIELD ALUMS PERFORM AT LAKEWOOD BAND FESTIVAL
On Thursday morning, November 3, Alvin Lowrey will be doing a trumpet
masterclass for area high school band participants, and will be rehearsing
with the Carthage College Wind Symphony on Thursday and Friday afternoons as
guest soloist. Then, on Saturday, November 5, Alvin Lowrey will rehearse
Lo Presti's Suite for Five Trumpets (doubling parts with 10 players), and
that evening will be a Chamber Concert dedicated to music of Lo Presti. In
addition to the Suite for Five Trumpets on that concert, Woody Hodges and
friends will play Lo Presti's Suite for Six Bassoons, and Fred Halgedahl
will play Lo Presti's Nocturne on viola.
Then, on Sunday, November 6, the Carthage College Concert Band and Wind
Symphony will present the final concert in the afternoon. Woody Hodges will
conduct the CC Concert Band in the "Overture" and "Iron Horse" from Kanza;
and Alvin Lowrey will play Kent Kennan's own orchestration for wind symphony
of Kennan's Sonata for Trumpet. (Kennan, Lo Presti and the CC director of
bands, James Ripley, are all graduates of Eastman; hence the connection.)
Alvin Lowrey and Woody Hodges were in the same class in the early 1960's. Fred Halgedahl
graduated in 1965.
